Dear Friends,

Greetings from China!

I am here in Beijing with 100,000 Strong founding supporter Florence Fang, 100,000 Strong board member and Deloitte Executive Chris Cooper, and California Governor Jerry Brown, who took a break from his trade and investment mission to China this week to help us announce a very exciting new study abroad program for California community colleges!

The program, which Gov. Brown announced at a ceremony with Ambassador Gary Locke, is made possible through a very generous $250,000 gift from the Florence Fang Family Foundation. At the outset, the effort will send dozens of students from the San Mateo Community College District to study in China. It will expand to other California community colleges in the years ahead.

Greetings from China

Creating opportunities for these community college students is central to the mission of the 100,000 Strong Foundation. Approximately 43 percent of American undergraduates are enrolled in community colleges, but community college students represent less than 3 percent of those who study abroad. It is critical that these students – our future workforce – are prepared to engage constructively with China, our fastest-growing trade partner.

The 100,000 Strong Foundation was founded on the principle that study abroad should not just be reserved for those whose families can afford it. This new program will offer study abroad opportunities to a diverse group of non-traditional students, students who may not otherwise even think to go to China.

In the coming weeks, I look forward to sharing more details about the California community college initiative and the exciting work we are doing together.

Thanks, as always, for your support,
