The 1 Million Strong campaign works to grow the number of US K-12 students learning Mandarin to 1 million by 2020. Launched in 2015 by Presidents Barack Obama and Xi Jinping, 1 Million Strong seeks a fivefold increase in student numbers, from 200,000 to 1 million, within five years. The campaign involves three core components – assessing Mandarin language learning curriculum standards and norms, expanding Mandarin language teacher training and certification programs and developing technology platforms to enable students across the country to access Mandarin language programs.
The 100,000 Strong campaign is the US-China Strong Foundation’s original and signature campaign to dramatically increase and diversify study abroad to China as a means to strengthen the US-China relationship. In 2014, the initial goal of seeing 100,000 students study abroad in China was surpassed. The Foundation continues to build upon its success, working with partners across the country to raise awareness of the importance of study abroad, increase the diversity of students participating in programs and working with corporate sponsors to increase the number of scholarships.
A centerpiece of the US-China Strong Foundation’s grassroots movement, the US-China Alumni Network will seek to cultivate future leaders through professional development and engagement opportunities that foster commitment to US-China relations. The soon-to-be-launched network will build upon the Foundation’s existing Student Ambassador program that mobilizes more than 500 young leaders involved in US-China relations to encourage more Americans to learn Mandarin and study in China. By expanding the Student Ambassador program to the US-China Alumni Network, the Foundation aims to secure the long-term engagement of American and Chinese students and young professionals to deepen and sustain ties between the two countries’ next generation of leaders.
