Holden to Bring Decades of China, Business Expertise; Take USCS to the Next Level

WASHINGTON, DC – (September 5, 2017) – The US-China Strong Foundation, a global nonprofit committed to strengthening US-China ties, today announced the appointment of its new Chief Executive Officer John L. Holden, a veteran China expert with decades of experience in US-China business and political relations.

“I’m honored to join US-China Strong and work on its important mission to ensure that future American leaders have the tools to engage productively with China,” said Holden. “I have been a witness to the development of US-China relations since I first visited China in 1974, and know firsthand the benefits of productive relations between our two countries. Now, more than ever, we must invest in programs that facilitate cooperation and reduce friction in this most consequential bilateral relationship. I look forward to collaborating with our partners, stakeholders and supporters to enhance the US-China relationship through Mandarin language learning, China study abroad and innovative programming such as the US-China Career Connection.”

Holden joins US-China Strong from Peking University, where as Associate Dean he helped launch the university’s Yenching Academy, a full-fellowship Master’s in China Studies program for future leaders. While at the Yenching Academy, Holden traveled widely to recruit talented students from over sixty countries, the first of whom received their degrees in July.

A graduate of Stanford University and the University of Minnesota, where he studied Chinese language and literature, Holden was President of the National Committee on US-China Relations (NCUSCR) from 1998 to 2005. Under his leadership, the NCUSCR expanded its scope to include the US-China Young Leaders Forum, the Foreign Policy Colloquium and Track II dialogues and programs on topics ranging from health and the environment to education and judicial reform. Previously, he was Chairman of the Board of Governors of the American Chamber of Commerce in China and has held leadership positions with Cargill Inc., Hill & Knowlton and other China-related firms. Holden has lived in Beijing, Hong Kong and Taipei for more than 30 years.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome John to the US-China Strong team,” said George Lee, Chairman of the US-China Strong Foundation Board of Directors. “His decades of expertise in cross-cultural relations, program development and foreign policy – not to mention all things China – will allow us to build on the success of our current initiatives, enhance our programmatic capabilities and grow and expand our organization.”

Holden will become CEO effective October 1, replacing Eugene Huang, who has served as Acting CEO of US-China Strong since January.
